IMMEDIATE OPENING: PART-TIME REMOTE CONSULTANT WRITER

Statewide not for profit seeks a consultant writer for a grant-funded project supporting the empowerment and self-determination of people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

QUICK GUIDES: TOOLS FOR INDEPENDENCE PROJECT

Funded by the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, WRI is developing a series of user-friendly “Quick Guides” on practical life skills to support full participation in the community by individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Coordinating closely with WRI, the writer will draft informational guides in accessible language, adhering to Plain Language and/or Easy Read principles in order to support people of all ages and ability levels to engage with the content. It is expected that the writer will participate in planning meetings with the WRI project team throughout the project, and will make needed adjustments to the Guides as the documents go from draft to final production.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

At least three years of experience as a professional writer/editor
Knowledge and experience with writing content in accessible language; familiarity with Plain Language and/or Easy Read principles
Knowledge of principles of accessible communication via print, online and in person media
Bachelor’s degree in related field; additional studies and training relevant to the project desired
Expertise in content related to inclusive community environments to support self- determination of individuals with I/DD desired
Experience in working well within a team environment, treating colleagues with respect and creatively brainstorming solutions
Ability to work independently, and complete projects in a timely manner
Experience working in non-profit agencies and/or government desirable
Knowledge and skills in working with and for persons from diverse cultures and backgrounds

Candidates interested in this position should submit a resume, cover letter, and two writing samples. Writing samples featuring accessible language such as Plain Language or Easy Read are desirable.
The writer’s services are needed for an average of 5-12 hours/week from date of hire until the Guides are fully written. The position is fully remote. The successful candidate will be paid as a consultant at a rate commensurate with skills and experience ($40-50/hour, based on relevant experience).
