We are looking for essays, opinion, reviews, features and slow journalism on the topic of 'borders'.
We’re looking for critical articles, slow journalism features, interviews and essays that explore the environmental implications of the term ‘borders’ for for our forthcoming Issue 8 (Autumn 2021).
TOPICS CAN BE ANYTHING, BUT COULD INCLUDE:
- Asylum, migration, and border crossing;
- State violence and nationalism;
- Definitions of net zero pledges and carbon accounting, legal frameworks;
- Histories of conflict, colonialism and occupation;
- Art, film, literature and music that explore borders and displacement;
- Ecosystems and conservation initiatives;
- Procurement, supply chains and the circular economy;
Please send a detailed pitch to editor@itsfreezinginla.com with the subject line ‘FAO IFLA PITCHES’ by June 17th. This means a few paragraphs or outline of the topic you want to cover, with details of any key case studies, examples, interviewees or ideas that you would include – we’re looking to understand what you want to say, and how you are planning to structure the article or flesh out the topic.

KEY NOTES
- Please send a detailed pitch to editor@itsfreezinginla.com with the subject line ‘FAO IFLA PITCHES’ by June 17th;
- We pay £150 per 600 words, and look for articles of 600, 1200 or 2400 words;
- You can be based in any country, topics can be about all different countries, states, regions and interpretations on the theme;
- First time writers welcome to apply;
- English does not have to be your first language, we can also work in translation;
- We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply. If you feel able, let us know how we can help you navigate the writing and pitching process, eg particular deadlines, formats, editorial support, translation etc;
- You must be able to write up the piece by the end of July 2021, with availability for editing throughout August 2021;
- You do not need to provide images or illustrations;
- We do accept poems, short stories, interviews, essays, features and opinion;
Please note that we cannot reply to all submissions. You will hear from us by 11th July if we would like to work with you. You can also request pitch feedback after this time.
