Do you report on climate and/or philanthropy? Our philanthropy project is planning to publish some investigations/reported pieces this year.
Rates: We've just received funding for this project, and we can be somewhat led by writer's own requests—but as a guide we've just agreed a contract of £550 for a 2,000-word reported piece. We would pay closer to £200/800 words for an op-ed. We're a pub that reports on the global philanthropy sector, so writers should consider that as they're thinking about story ideas.
Below are our digital publishing guidelines.
GUIDELINES FOR NEW WRITERS
We welcome diverse perspectives from the global philanthropy field.
As an observer of philanthropy, who’s opinion and perspective will be of interest to those involved in the global philanthropy sector, we invite you to contribute to the community by writing a piece on a specific aspect of philanthropy, civil society, or social investment. By agreeing to write a piece for us, we request you adhere to the following:
What we are looking for
- Your opinions on topical issues, developments and trends in philanthropy and social investment. We want contributions to provoke debate and conversations about the field.
- Your personal reflections rather than more ‘corporate’ positions, even where you’re writing as part of an organisation. We want to hear your voice in your piece.
- Your unique and informed analysis – most of our readers are time-poor and selective about what they read. Be concise and keep language simple.
- Contributions can be as short as 500 words and ideally no longer than 850 words.
- Original content that has not already been published elsewhere (except where we have agreed to cross-post from another site).
Please avoid
- Wider reflections on charity or social issues – we try to maintain a focus on philanthropy and social investment in order to create a ‘philanthropy community’
- Posts that focus on self-promotion of your organization or its activities, for example descriptions of an organization’s own programmes or statements of agreed policies. Posts can of course refer to your organization’s own programmes, publications or research, but in the context of analysis and reflections on the field more widely.
- Posts that are self-promoting or in any way constituting advertising for your organization. All links must go to relevant sites.
- Posts longer than 850 words – though there could be some flexibility here if the content warrants a longer piece. Our daily coverage of news & views from the philanthropy sector is a space for more brief reflections, with our weekly premium column and quarterly print magazine giving space for longer pieces. We reserve the right to reject content that we don’t consider appropriate. We also reserve the right to edit where necessary – though our aim is to preserve the unique voice of each contributor.
Submitting your article
- Please submit contributions in Word format.
- Please supply headshot of the author
- If available, please share landscape photos that can help bring your piece to life. Ideally these will involve people and will not be posed. Such images can either be what your organisation has on file or images shot by you (incl. cell phone images) while working on your piece.
