SEND US YOUR PITCHES FOR ISSUE 23

Whether in response to prisons or police, paying rent or working for wage labour, borders or the gender binary, we are experiencing a turn toward abolition as a framework. The politics of abolition helps us grasp the injustices we experience by their roots and it also serves us as a political orientation, guiding us on the path toward transformation.

For the next Issue of Upping the Anti: a journal of theory and action, we are especially interested in exploring the historical and contemporary praxis of abolition and resonant social theories and movements of Marxist and anarchist revolutionary change. More than ever, systemic oppression is being met with systemic critique: timid reforms to the status quo can only “tweak Armageddon,” as Ruth Wilson Gilmore reminds us.

Revolution, abolition, decolonization: these are complex and daunting responsibilities. But, following Mariame Kaba, “the need to change everything… means there are many places to start, infinite opportunities to collaborate, and endless imaginative interventions and experiments to create.”

For our 23rd Issue, we want to hear about all the trouble you and your comrades are getting up to in the fight for a better world.

With abolition and similar revolutionary frameworks in mind, Upping the Anti invites submissions that engage themes of:

While we are particularly interested in the themes above, we encourage organizers, activists, and anyone interested in changing the world––and in what it will take to change it––to contribute to Issue 23. We welcome all submissions that critically reflect on where our struggles are at and use this reflection to develop new strategies of resistance and learn from our allied movements.

More on who we are as a journal…

As activists and thinkers ourselves, we understand that cultures of crisis-to-crisis organizing and burnout can make it difficult to take the time to reflect on our strategies, tactics, and movement histories. The goal of our journal is to create a space for contributors to carefully and critically engage in this much-needed process of reflection, theorization, and strategy-building within our movements.

Each issue contains a diverse group of activists and organizers that reflect on the state of our movements today. We publish articles, interviews, roundtables, and book reviews in order to engage with our collective resistance in multiple ways.

Deadline for pitches is July 1, 2021
