Journalists!: We're looking for pitches for our upcoming Bankhead Issue. Get involved in redefining Atlanta journalism. We're looking for stories about under-covered civic issues—housing, government, food access, etc.—told through the Bankhead and Grove Park communities. We'll help you shape story ideas through our listening work, where residents tell us what information they need most to thrive. Pay rate starts at $.50/word!

PITCH THE BANKHEAD ISSUE!

Canopy Atlanta is a community-led journalism project reimagining journalism by partnering with communities in the metro area to choose, report, and present stories. Check out how we did this through our inaugural issue in West End.

Our Bankhead issue will be released in late fall. Your story idea must be rooted in some way in or about Bankhead or Grove Park—maybe it’s an issue specific to the area; a piece of its history; or a way in which something happening Bankhead is representative of a bigger issue. We commission written stories (short and longform), photo essays, audio, graphic ideas, and more. We pay competitively and would prioritize pitches from journalists with Bankhead or Grove Park connections (though that’s not required to work with us).

Working with Canopy Atlanta will be different: We collaborate with community members—which means our acceptance of your pitch may be based on what feedback we hear from Bankhead and Grove Park community members, who’ll help choose story topics. You may also be working with a Bankhead Journalism Fellow—community members whom we’re training—who may contribute reporting or more, and you’ll be expected to partake in some editorial meetings to facilitate collaboration. (For an example, see our story about West End’s “water boys,” on which local writer Gavin Godfrey and West End Fellow Aboubacar Kante collaborated.)

You likely won’t hear conclusively about an idea you send us until mid- to late August.
