A special project is in the works! Broccoli is currently seeking pitches for Weed Moms, a new book to be published 2022. It will be a collection of original essays, Q & As, as-told-to pieces, and short vignettes exploring the many ways that cannabis intersects with motherhood.

We are eager to commission new work from writers whose experiences of motherhood encompass a spectrum of realities—this could include experiences of infertility, loss, grief, mentorship, adoption, surrogacy (in various contexts), and more. Motherhood is not a singular experience, and there is no one way to be a mother, but pitches should center interaction and caring between humans.

We’re open to pitches proposing stories of various lengths, formats, and tones. From lighthearted and funny to serious and thoughtful, positive or negative—these stories should reflect a wide and varying range of lived experience. Most writers pitching us tend to be under forty, but we are hoping to cast a broader generational net here and are open to pitches from writers of all ages as well as collaborations between younger and older folks.

Pitches are due by 9:00 A.M. July 23, 2021; stories will be commissioned by August 1.

Themes and ideas to inspire you, but please feel free to expand beyond these concepts in your pitch emails as well:

• Hiding: Stories about how family relationships or cultural expectations shaped your willingness to be open about using cannabis.
• Sharing: Is weed something you share with your mother (or child)? How did that happen? What would you say to your mom—or your kid—about weed if you could?
• Discoveries: Stories exploring connecting to weed at an unexpected time—like pregnancy, or after children leave home—or finding out that a mother or grandmother figure in your life had a relationship to the plant you never knew.
• Legacies: How a mother figure's relationship to weed shaped your own.
• Memories: What happened that time when your mom—or your kid—caught you smoking?

Other mothers: Stories about community: finding connection as a mother using weed, or stories of mother-figures that intersect with weed.

Do not send full drafts or previously published works; we are looking to commission new, original writing. Writers should be willing to embark on a collaborative and involved editing process with Broccoli’s editorial team—there will be edits! Rates will vary depending on length and format of commission, but we will do our best to match your usual rate.

Rates will depend on the length and format of the piece, but generally speaking, our rates start at $.40/word.
