OPEN CALL: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

The Architectural Review invites pitches from writers, practitioners, illustrators and artists for the 125th birthday issue published in November 2021

November 2021 marks the AR’s 125th birthday. Five years ago, the AR published its AR120 issue which looked back at the magazine’s history, mining its archive for contemporary resonance.

For AR125, we are planning an issue that looks forward, recognising that we build a future in the stories and histories we tell today. The present feels bleak at times, but the future needs to be brighter. Seeking to provide reflections on ‘where do we go from here?’, the AR November issue will be full of stories that imagine and speculate on alternative futures, and sets out how they could be built.

We are welcoming pitches that take various visual and textual forms – essays, fiction, poetry, graphic novels, drawing and photo essays, conversations, sketches, studies of unbuilt projects, memes, films, podcasts (the list is growing, and online content will accompany the print publication).

Pitches should be a short paragraph detailing your proposal, or a simple sketch and explanation. We welcome pitches from young and aspiring writers and practitioners, including those who haven’t been published in the architectural media before, as well as collective and collaborative proposals.

Send your pitch to editorial@architectural-review.com by the extended deadline of Friday 20 August and please share the word with anyone you think might be interested in contributing. Successful pitches will be replied to in August to discuss a commission. All commissions will be paid and we will be looking to receive first drafts by the end of September.
