Freelance writers needed to write short, entertaining scripts about topics in U.S. history and literature. Expertise in U.S. military history and African American literature particularly sought.

We seek experienced writers with a background in journalism / screenwriting / academia and a knack for great storytelling to write informative, entertaining scripts (c. 1,000 words) to be edited, and ultimately recorded by professional voice actors, for use on our mobile app.

ABOUT US:

We are a young start-up in Berlin, Germany building mobile apps that spread general knowledge via entertaining audio stories. Our mission is to help busy people pursue lifelong learning in a simple and enjoyable way. We launched our German-language app in January 2021, and are now building a second English-language product intended for the American and other English-language markets.

The Gaiali mobile app conveys the principal points of the canon of Western and American history (think of it as “everything you should have learned in school”) through pre-recorded audio stories. The app delivers the content to the user through structured categories and playlists.

YOUR JOB:

Write punchy, plain-language scripts, on some of the major topics of Western history (with an emphasis on American history and culture, as well as European history of particular relevance to Americans). The scripts are meant to edify and educate a general audience, through compelling storytelling.

We are ultimately interested in finding writers with whom we can work on a long-term basis.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS:

Native English speaker; minimum 5-6 years of professional writing experience (preferably in journalism, screenwriting, or related field that emphasizes the power of storytelling). Senior-level writers and even retired writers are encouraged to apply!
Specialized knowledge in one of the following: African American literature, U.S. military history.
Degree in one of these or related field (advanced degree preferred, e.g. Masters or Ph.D.)
Experience writing about complex topics for a novice audience
Knack for intelligently simplifying complex material and bringing it to life
Ability to perform additional research and fact-checking as necessary

100 percent remote working
Entry-level pay of $100 per text; successful work can lead quickly to increased pay rates. An hourly rate of $40 is also available in some cases for content-planning assistance.
