I am looking for global climate solutions pitches addressing sea ice loss, waste management, air quality and carbon dioxide emissions.
PITCHING GUIDELINES
1. The story you pitch should be about an environmental problem in a specific region, or an environmental/social problem in a specific region and a novel response to it.
2. We prefer originally reported stories sourced on-the-ground, rather than desk-based pieces, featuring two/three interviewees: ideally a subject who has benefited from the project (if the subject is environmental/social and human-driven) and one of its architects.
3. We prefer grassroots community projects and in-country charitable projects and social enterprises rather than corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
4. We are looking for journalistic treatments of an initiative rather than academic or theoretical analysis (‘time to decolonise aid’ e.g., is worthy interrogation but not a fit for this strand).
5. We are also not looking for projects centred in/around eco hotels or resorts unless the environmental interventions they propose are truly novel and community driven.
6. We are not looking for round-ups or pre-written pieces.
7. The piece should ask: has the response worked? Why? It should also ask: what insights does it offer, as well as using data to back up assertions and enquiring into its shortcomings.
8. Our rate of pay is £150 for a 450 word piece with a headline plus a summary of less than 100 words and we pay within two weeks of copy acceptance. We also ask journalists to source a few accompanying images.
9. Per point 6, please wait for a commission and brief before writing a piece; we do not accept unsolicited/uncommissioned stories.
We are currently seeking stories in the Americas, Asia, Australia, the African continent and Europe (apart from the UK), although welcome pitches in other contexts for later months.
