The typical range is between $300–500, and an average story is about $400. (This is the budget I’m inheriting at the moment, so I’m hoping to find ways to boost these rates in the coming months.)
The stories we’re typically looking for are “mini-features” around 800–1500 words (1000 words as the ideal target), with about 2–5 sources. Most of these stories wouldn’t be tied too strongly to the news cycle and have more of an evergreen life, so the turnaround from pitch to first draft is usually a couple weeks or so. But we do look for writers who are able to turn things around quickly when it’s needed, and I try my best to offer rates that are higher than normal when this is the situation.
