We are looking for writers for MILK—coming in early 2022. Our first issue will explore what milk—at once ubiquitous, indispensable, accepted, rejected, and contested—means for women and the world. All writers will be compensated with a flat rate of CAD$125 (approximately US$100). Hopefully we can offer more once we get off the ground. Open to international writers.
Issue #01: MILK
Milk is a nutrient-rich liquid food produced by the mammary glands of mammals. It is the primary source of nutrition for young mammals, including breastfed human infants, before they are able to digest solid food. - Wikipedia
Despite this seemingly simple encapsulation of the creamy liquid we call ‘milk’, the role that it plays in our lives almost belies definition: it is at once an nutrient-dense emulsion, a bodily fluid, a contested source of calcium, a political signifier, and a religious symbol. Women in particular are bound to the liquid through biology, the bottle, and the shopping cart. Nutritional guides tell us our kids should be drinking it. Climate activists tell us our planet depends on nixing it. Farmers tell us they’re going bankrupt from producing it. And what cows want to tell us is a whole other story.
We believe that none of these issues are black-and-white; a feminist perspective on milk must thrive in the grey. For this reason, our first issue explores what milk—at once ubiquitous, indispensable, accepted, rejected, and contested—means for women and the world. We want this issue to tell stories that offer new and nuanced perspectives, and shape the way our readers engage with milk as a feminist issue. Topics might include:
- The intersection of embodied practices of breastfeeding with race and class
- Milk insecurity and single mothers as a class phenomenon
- Women’s relationships to kosher food laws
- Women dairy farmers and nonhuman conceptions of community
- Neocolonial corporate influence on formula consumption
- The tension (or non-tension) between feminism and animal milk consumption
- Reclaiming ‘Soy boy’: Vegan milk alternatives as ‘queer food practice’
Do you have a story to tell about women and milk? We’d love to hear from you! Contribute to this inaugural issue by taking on one of our existing ideas or proposing one of your own. We would be happy to receive pitches for written or audio content of all shapes and sizes. Get in touch with us by November 3rd, 2021 at pitch@feministfoodjournal.com.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: Feminist Food Journal explores the ways that food and feminism intersect in collective consciousness, private lives, policy, and practice. It shares the stories of women changing our food system for the better, believing that these stories should be front and center in our efforts to do things differently. More information here.
