COMPANY/PUBLICATION: NORTH COAST CURRENT

The North Coast Current — an award-winning online community news journal based in Encinitas, California — seeks freelance writers interested in covering specific topics for the coastal north San Diego County communities it covers. Candidates must be local to the San Diego region or show a strong familiarity with the area (practically all assignments are local to coastal North County).

TOPIC AREAS:

• Housing (including projects, politics, transportation, population)
• Education (K-12, private schools, higher education)
• Arts (music, theater, film, cuisine)
• Community (local nonprofits, history, diversity topics, personalities)
• Government (specifically cities of Encinitas, Carlsbad and Solana Beach, or others)
• Business (mom-and-pops, startups, business groups, larger companies)
• Columnists (opinion and/or community news)

FREELANCE DETAILS:

• Assignments average 300-500 words per story and can be a mix of stories pitched by the Current or pitched by the freelancer to the Current. Photo and video opportunities are also available on a per-assignment negotiated basis.
• Stories are a mix of time-sensitive and evergreen material.
• The number of assignments averages one to two per month or more depending on the Current's monthly budget (and limited to 35 total per year in California).
• In addition to professionals, the North Coast Current also welcomes university and community college journalism students to apply.
• Professional per-word pay rate starts at 20 cents per word.
• College student per-word pay rate starts at 10 cents per word.

• Professionals: Must hold at least an Associate's Degree in journalism or related media field
• College/university students: Must have proof of enrollment in the school's journalism or related media program
