I launched a zine where we anonymously review the literary landscape. I need more contributors. $150 a review. More details below:
I’m launching a zine. It is going to be anonymous commentary on the current literary landscape. Through book reviews and essays it’s going to center and celebrate the truth around the lit that’s out right now. I think this is an important conversation for a couple reasons; Brandon Taylor recently put in his stories that there are books on the NBA short list that still haven’t been reviewed by The New Yorker, call me naive but I was always hopeful—as much as you can be in an institution built by and steeped in patriarchal whiteness—that The New Yorker always prioritized the good shit. Traci of The Stacks was also exploring how spicy things can get when someone puts up a less than stellar review and the author gets involved. Especially when we have the added priority of rooting for everyone Black. As Wesley Morris said of Insecure in his 2018 essay The Morality Wars “…it might be too rare to dislike.” This isn’t just a conversation for influencers, authors have also mentioned how they might bite their tongue because they could end up on a panel with the author of a book they didn’t enjoy.
The theme of the first issue is Mediocrity. Come pitch me. Also authors, I’m talking to you. I’m paying a little bit.
The zine is going to be anonymous at least for the first year to prioritize truth not feelings. Definitely not ever with the intent of cruelty. I would hope that you know I’m not really into that. Also I’m open to the truth that I’m keeping it anonymous because I’m a punk. That’s what Bryan said. Bump him.
