Are you a writer who is interested in exploring buzzy topics in business and the economy, especially in areas such as fintech, software startups, crypto, e-commerce, and business scandals? Do you have the ability to generate interesting story pitches, as well as take assignments and direction from editors, and turn in clear, accurate, well-reported and engaging copy on a deadline? Can you write about financial topics and numbers as well as you can draft an intriguing Q&A, listicle or personality profile? If so, this might be a great role for you.

The Business of Business is a publication for leaders and strivers. We deliver crisp, clear reporting of business news and insights that our audience can use to level up their careers.

We’re looking for freelance contributors to help provide added depth and breadth to our coverage in one or more of several target areas: fintech, SaaS, crypto, e-commerce and for our Outcasts section (business scandals).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Write 1-3 stories per week within assigned deadlines
• Pitch story ideas weekly; or be available for assignments from editors
• Take direction from editors and make revisions as requested on a timely basis
• Fact-check your work; ensure proper grammar, style, accurate numbers and name spellings
• Communicate quickly with editors when story ideas change or assignments fall through
• Be ethical and fair with subjects and sources
• Produce original work; do not plagiarize other published articles (including your own)
• Disclose all potential conflicts on story assignments to editors
• Write to specifications, i.e. word count established by editors, and in the formats requested

QUALIFICATIONS

• 1+ years of experience as a staff writer/reporter or freelance writer
• At least 3 strong published work samples (please include in your application)
• Experience writing about business and financial subjects
• Ability to complete a 700 word assignment in 1 day; or a 1,000-1,200 word assignment in 2 days
• Knowledge of of AP Style
• Access to equipment necessary for the role, including a computer and broadband internet connection

COMPENSATION

This is a contractor role. We pay a starting rate of $0.35 per word (based on the number of words published, after a piece is commissioned, accepted, and edited). The rate is subject to increase based on experience and abilities.
