We welcome pitches on a broad array of news topics regarding youth and young adults who, generally, are no older than late 20s. We pay $1 per published word for most articles.
Those reported topics include juvenile justice; disability rights; COVID-19; foster care; adoption; migration; climate change and environment; LGBTQ+/gender; employment and the economy; technology; after school, summer school and other out-of-school time programs; social, economic and other safety net programs; health, including mental and behavioral; substance use disorders; gun violence; homelessness; youth development; resilience; and trauma.
We are increasing our investigative and enterprise reporting on the agencies and authorities working with vulnerable youth, including child protective services, family and juvenile courts, youth detention facilities, probation/parole and others.
We are also launching a special project around youth and climate change and are especially keen on deeply reported articles that explore this topic.
We seek a diversity of experienced and emerging writers of straight-ahead journalism — including those with lived experience in the areas we cover — who adhere to the facts, fairness, AP Style and other best practices and standards of our craft.
Occasionally, we will consider publishing timely, topical first-person essays that are rigorously reported with multiple sources. We do not currently contract writers outside the United States or cover international child welfare issues.
Pitches should be 200 to 400 words long and include a working lead; nut graf; confirmed or potential sources; and hyperlinks to relevant research and other data.
