Writers wanted (criminal justice, policing, prisons, etc.) | $1 per word
Added 2022-01-29 17:51:16 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: THE APPEAL
The Appeal is looking for freelance writers to contribute to our weekly newsletter. The newsletter features reported commentary on the criminal legal system. We pay $1/per word and publish 800-word pieces in our newsletter.
We are looking for two writers to each contribute one newsletter per month. We want news-responsive or evergreen pieces on topics related to criminal justice, such as policing, prisons, prosecutors, judges, juvenile incarceration, and more. We also publish criticism of the media’s portrayal of the criminal legal system. The pieces can be national or local in scope.
The Appeal is a worker-led nonprofit newsroom dedicated to exposing how the U.S. criminal legal system fails to keep people safe and, instead, perpetuates harm.
The position is remote. All pieces will be edited, fact-checked, and copy-edited prior to publication on our website and circulation with our mailing list. BIPOC writers and those directly affected by the criminal legal system are especially encouraged to apply.
To apply, send an email with your resume, one to three writing samples, and a few sentences introducing yourself to newsletter@theappeal.org. Please use the subject line “Appeal Newsletter Writer” in your email.
