I'm open for pitches. Currently, we pay a flat fee of $300 for Journal stories, no assigned word count. It's not a lot, so I encourage you to pitch stories you're just in love with.
What types of stories? Those that look at food through the lens of history, migration, culture, ecology, economy and/or politics, or vice versa. But also: poems, creative nonfiction, more academic-leaning work. Let's have fun and play around with narrative structures.
I'm happy to work with newer writers, international writers, writers from outside the food world. Just note, no matter your background, that I prefer shorter pitches, and we can't accept previously published work.
While many of our stories have plenty of first-person, we use that to contextualize the story. I'm NOT looking for personal essays unless they connect the individual to regional or cultural experiences or phenomena.
For clarity: This is a food magazine, and this is for our online publication.
