Study Hall is seeking a writer for our weekly Digest newsletter.

This is a contract position and requires filing a weekly reported newsletter at a rate of $2,000 a month ($500 per newsletter), paid monthly.

The staff writer will work closely with the managing editor and editorial operations director on the weekly Digest. You should be comfortable pitching ideas for each Digest, receiving feedback, and working with a team to produce content. You must be able to work independently and report on your progress.

The ideal candidate is a close observer of the media industry and an experienced reporter, skeptical of the industry’s power and its players. Candidates should be comfortable reporting on a weekly basis, breaking news, adapting to fast-moving stories, and filing clear, consistent copy on time. You also have a voice — this isn’t a dry mainstream news organization. Your skills as a reporter should be equal to your voice as a critic.

Study Hall is a remote-only workplace. We work in Slack, Zoom and Google Docs. You must file by 10 AM EST every Monday, be online for edits until roughly 1 PM EST (examples of past digests are here), and be available one day a week for staff and editorial meetings. All other hours are flexible. We have unlimited paid time off, and are flexible with any other needs. We take non-work hours very seriously: you’ll never be asked to work beyond your allotted job responsibilities without compensation. As a staff writer, you’ll also be welcome to pitch articles outside the scope of the Digest newsletter for publication on the website itself.

We are particularly interested in hearing from BIPOC media workers.

This position can be based anywhere within the United States.

COMPENSATION

• $2,000 a month for approximately 10 hours a week of work.
• Contract position with the possibility of renewal after 3 months.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Write the weekly Study Hall Digest newsletter.
• Pitch original ideas for stories about the media.
• Participate in weekly editorial meetings to develop angles, stories, and formats for the weekly Digest.
• Remain well-informed and curious about trends and storylines in the media industry, both macro (publishers lobbying to regulate Facebook) and micro (New York zine feuds).
• Report to editor Vicky Mochama and editorial operations director Rachel Kincaid.
• Requirements
• 3+ years of journalism experience, with significant reporting experience (can include freelance and/or work at a college newspaper).
• Demonstrated ability to file on time, turn around edits quickly, and generally manage a fast-paced production schedule.
• Solid organizational and communication skills; ability to report on progress and communicate with editors about roadblocks.
• Familiarity with the media industry and the topical conversations being had by media workers – engagement with media twitter is helpful.
• A unique voice.
• Familiarity with Study Hall’s mission and operations.
