Non-fiction submissions wanted (Rhode Island) | $100 per piece

We’re looking for your best words about Rhode Island. We want essays full of humor and life, we want short fiction set here, we want love letters to Providence, we want essays about Twin Oaks and inheriting your Dad’s low-number license plate and working at McCoy Stadium etc. etc. etc. If you’ve got it, send it—the only real parameters are that it must be about Rhode Island, by Rhode Islanders, for Rhode Islanders. Your audience is you—other folks with strong relationships to the Ocean State. If it’s about Rhode Island and you live here, lived here, loved here, loathed here, we’ll read it.

So, who counts as a Rhode Islander? We’re pretty easy: If you have a strong connection to the Ocean State, we’ll take you. Maybe you grew up here but live elsewhere now, or you relocated here in your 80s, or you spent one short but beautiful and meaningful summer at Brown or in Newport or on the Block. If Rhode Island is important to you, and you identify with other Rhode Islanders, we want to read your stuff.

We will publish monthly via Substack starting in spring 2022. We pay a minimum of $100 for accepted, unpublished submissions. We’ll discuss reprint fees on a case-by-case basis; if you have something you think is a fit but it’s already been published, email us—if it’s a fit, we’ll talk.

Please submit non-fiction submissions of 500 to 2,500 words on our Submittable page, or email Google Docs to downcityink@gmail.com. Do not send PDFs. Please make sure to share a note about your relationship to Rhode Island.

The editor checks email often but often travels for her day job. If you haven’t heard back from us within three weeks, please write again. Please note that emails using the phrase “just circling back on this” will automatically implode upon sending.
