Pitches wanted (urban environments) | 25 cents per word
Added 2022-03-12 14:14:42 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: EARTH ISLAND JOURNAL
Deadline: 15 March 2022
Earth Island Journal is seeking pitches for an upcoming special edition on urban environments.
Though cities cover only about 2 percent of Earth’s land area, they consume two-thirds of the world’s energy and account for over 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, these dense, built-up areas are major drivers of the global economy, generating, according to some estimates, more than 80 percent of the global GDP.
In this issue, we would like to explore the full range of issues and solutions related to built environments, sustainability, and nature, including, but not limited to, how cities can and are tackling the climate crisis, the role of architecture in developing climate resilience, and how urban environments affect our understanding of nature and our place in it.
We are looking for on-the-ground reports, as well as personal essays, artwork, and think pieces of varying lengths. For information on fees and what to include in your pitch please read our writers guidelines.
Please send us your pitches by March 15. We plan to make assignments by mid-April and would need full submissions by late June. The articles will appear in our Autumn 2022 print edition and online.
Please send your story ideas to submissions@earthisland.org with “Urban Environments” in the subject line.
RATES (from the submission guidelines): We pay writers 25 cents/word for print stories. You can expect to earn about $750-$1000 for an in-depth feature story (about 4,000 words). For online reports, the fee is $150. Online reports are a great way to get into the Journal, especially if you are new to reporting and writing. We publish online five days a week and are always looking for fresh ideas.
