We cover careers and work. I’m looking for more freelance pitches as we continue to expand our coverage beyond the actionable advice we’re best known for.
What are we looking for? Reported features, essays, perspectives, even humor pieces (and yes, some advice articles) that shed light, provide insight, reframe, and capture zeitgeist at a moment when careers, work, and culture are shifting and evolving.
We’d love to see more ideas for reported features as well as pitches with day job–driven angles (and fewer on freelancing/why you went freelance).
What are some things we’re particularly interested in right now? Fresh takes on:
- Pandemic, Great Resignation, etc.
- Boomerang employees
- Offices, hybrid work, etc.
- Mental health
- DEI
- Working parents
- 4-day workweek (not as a freelancer/self-employed)
- Unions/organizing
- Pay gaps
- Work culture
- Early career
What can we pay? Fees will vary—especially as we’re exploring new formats and types of stories—based on the writer, scope of the piece, reporting required, etc. But most pieces pay $300-$600 (and we'll consider going higher for the right stories).
How do you pitch? Send me an email with subject line “Pitch: [your idea in a nutshell]”. Include:
- Sample headline
- Brief pitch (1-3 grafs)
- Sentence or two about you
- 2-3 clips (as similar as you have to what you’re pitching)
How many pitches will we take? We’re going for quality rather than quantity, commissioning a handful of pieces per month.
