We pay $200-$600 per piece, but honestly we're happy to negotiate more if you've sunk a lot of reporting into it. Bluntly, we'd like to pay more as our funding improves, but we want to be honest with our writers about our capacity.
We love publishing first-time writers. When we ask for clips or writing samples, we're not asking for anything more than your personal blog or class assignment so we can get a good understanding of your voice.
Email pitch format: SUBJECT: Proposed Headline We encourage direct, clear headlines that give a good grasp of what your story will cover. BODY: 2-4 paragraphs that describe the conflict, solution/analysis, interview process, turn-around time, and word count.
