COMMUNITY JUSTICE PITCHING GUIDE
The Continent is a pan-African newspaper that is designed to be read and shared on WhatsApp, allowing us to reach a vast audience across the continent and the African diaspora. In just over two years, we have built up a circulation of on average 90,000 readers per week in 105 different countries, making The Continent Africa’s most widely read newspaper.
A key tenet of our newsroom philosophy is that news happens beyond presidential palaces and capital cities. It is very important to us to report on communities that rarely receive international media attention, because we believe that in doing so we will be providing our readers with a more accurate picture of the African continent and the world.
In other words, to understand what is happening in Africa, it is vital to understand the issues faced by these communities – and, perhaps more importantly, the innovative methods that are being used to surmount these challenges. Through doing journalism about these communities, and working with journalists in them, we will also be able to put these issues directly in front of our audience – many of whom are policymakers (diplomats, government officials, activists, and businesspeople) who are in a position to do something. And there is no doubt that the experiences of marginalised communities in one country will resonate with issues faced in another.
Do you have a pitch about organisations and individuals facilitating access to justice; or barriers in access to justice? What about an interesting take on an underreported issue or group? Maybe an original angle about a story already in the news? Then send me your pitch through the online form below.
The cut-off date is June 30 at 11pm SAST.
