Finished my 4th week as New Editor. I am looking for experienced Black writers anywhere. Pitch good black stories and meet deadlines. Rates: $200 digital, $300-$400 print.
Specifically, Detroit, Memphis, Atlanta, Chicago are my 1st priority because those are the markets we serve and are lacking. But a good story is a good story. I don't deny good story pitches. I actually LOVE them.
As a fairly NEW editor in chief I'd like to offer some advice when pitching. You would be surprised at how many writers don't understand the nuances of pitching—especially for editors like me that are actively looking for writers with a budget to pay them. 9 of of the 10 pitches I get have nothing to do with the magazine. Those are the facts.
If you want to write for us, read the magazine first before pitching. We cater to Black women professionals 35+. Please pitch accordingly.
While I do LOVE that writers have website and keep track of their articles on Muckrack, I don't have time to go through tons of articles. Please send 2 or 3 samples of your work that is specific to our audience.
If you have an idea for an article; send that idea in a 1 or 2 sentence concise email. Most editors have 10 secs to see if there's a good story there. Keep it tight!
