CALL FOR FREELANCERS FOR THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is looking to expand its pool of freelance writers for National Trust online properties for 2022-2023. We are looking for writers that are interested in topics at the intersection of history and place, particularly related telling the full American story; sustaining historic sites; building stronger communities through preservation; preservation and climate change; and issues related to the transformation of historic preservation into an inclusive practice.
We are hoping to identify 5-10 regular contributors that we can assign stories to through the end of 2023. These individuals will also have the opportunity to pitch us pieces that fit into the themes above. We pay $250.00/story, details below.
We are looking for writers with experience building narratives for online audiences in a variety of formats. You must be able to take direction, write clearly, have a strong handle on grammar (our style is AP style, and we are in the process of developing an inclusive style guide for the organization), with some ability to do basic photo research to go with your pieces; often this includes working with the subject of the pieces to sign photo release forms. Research skills (either journalistic or in terms of historical research) are required. The ability to organize and clearly document your sources for factchecking is a must.
AUDIENCE
For our general audience we are looking for individuals who can produce stories that are readable by a wide audience (interesting, informative, not technical) with a conversational and friendly tone and compelling and succinct storytelling.
If you are interested in producing content for the professional audience, we are looking for writers with a deep understanding of historic preservation and the challenges and opportunities facing the field. These pieces are meant to be lessons learned and case studies and will be in specific focus areas still under development. Think of yourself as a columnist for the preservation field.
EXAMPLES OF STORY FORMATS: ($250/STORY UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED)
- Guides (short-form writing)
- Photo Essays (short-form writing)
- Narrative Stories (1000-1500 words)
- Q&A’s (1000-1500 words)
- Occasional Long-form feature stories (2000-3000 words, flexible pay rate depending on the story, note these pieces will be online only).
If you are interested in being one of our regular contributors, please send your name, contact information, 1-2 writing samples (links or PDFS are fine), and your audience preference (general or professional) to pchhaya@savingplaces.org with the subject line “Freelance Application.” If you are interested in writing for the professional audience, please also let us know three subject areas that you are most comfortable focusing on.
If you are selected, we’ll produce one story at $250.00 as a trial. Upon successful completion of the trial story, we will offer a contract for an agreed-upon number of stories for the coming year. The deadline to submit your application material is August 8, 2022. We are aiming to identify authors and assign an initial round of stories by September 1, 2022.
