ABOUT PULSO

Pulso is a Latino-led social enterprise dedicated to raising up and keeping the pulse on nuestra gente. We build deep digital relationships with Latinx folks through their phones in order to transform civic engagement and build political power.

Pulso attracts and engages Latinx folks through our innovative Latinx history and news service, which is based on Facebook Messenger. With this daily relationship and by telling the stories that have shaped our community, Pulso connects U.S.-based Latinos/as/x with our history and encourages subscribers to take action on critical issues, register to vote, and to cast their votes on Election Day.

Pulso is a project of Accelerate Change (AC), a nonprofit media lab dedicated to catalyzing new scalable and sustainable digital media models for citizen engagement. ABOUT THE POSITION

We‘re hiring a diligent U.S. Latino History Writer who can use their creative storytelling skills to help us make Latino history accessible, interesting, and relevant to our audience. The writer’s primary task will be deeply researching all sides current events from a Latino progressive lens, making deep connections to Latino history to contextualize those current events. They will also be tasked with researching moments in U.S. history highlighting Latino leaders, Latino accomplishments, and shedding light on the discrimination against Latinos that has existed since this country was founded. They will then use this research to write accessible, short-form content that will be used for Instagram carousels, ads, Facebook Messenger stories, podcast episodes and scripts for our video content across our social channels.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated passion for and background in U.S. Latino History
• Strong storyteller with deep knowledge and understanding of history and social justice topics, with an orientation towards mobilizing communities
• Ability to promptly produce clean, concise, error-free copy
• Deadline driven with excellent time management skills
• Fast learner and receptive to feedback
• Experience using research and data to inform content production

Experience in or have demonstrated interest in progressive political values

EXTRA POINTS

Strong virtual communication. You have availability to communicate with our staff as needed via email and Slack and participate in pre-arranged phone or video meetings each week (Monday through Friday, during normal business hours).

Initiative and follow-through. You take initiative pitching relevant stories for the Pulso audience, keep up with trends around the U.S. Latinx market, and adhere to deadlines and expectations when submitting written work.

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time, 3-month freelance role with potential to renew. The compensation is $30 per hour, with a range of 10-15 hours per week. Key tasks include pitching, researching, writing, editing, and participating in pre-arranged phone or video meetings (not to exceed 1-2 hours per week).
