Nice News features content often missed by major headlines, centered on changemakers who are shifting society for the better. ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Freelance News Writer, you will assist in the curation and production of good news content for the Nice News email series and website. This includes writing weekly web articles (500+ words), fact-checking stories that Nice News features, and pitching stories.

The role will also consist of filling in for the Editor or Assistant Editor on an as-needed basis, writing and editing the morning newsletter that has a direct path to reach hundreds of thousands of subscribers each day. When filling in for full-time team members, you will assist in the creation and editing of a variety of content pieces, such as our daily email editions, social media posts, and articles. This involves both editorial and administrative tasks, including inputting content for publication and campaign sending. It also includes working closely with the campaign management team, performing quality assurance prior to each campaign being sent.

This role will begin as part-time hours (~5 hours each week/20 hours per month), with the opportunity to increase and is fully remote.

YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR...

• Brand oversight. Executing style guidelines, brand voice, and quality standards that are consistent and distinctive.
• Content production. Writing and editing content as needed for multiple platforms, including web, email, and social media.
• Quality assurance. Writing and/or reviewing email campaigns and social posts (when needed) prior to scheduling, ensuring that all content is accurate and distributed on time.

YOU’RE A GREAT FIT IF YOU HAVE…

• 3+ years experience as a news writer or editor within a digital publishing company.
• Availability to work weekday mornings, with the ability to commit to the same day at least 1x/week.
• An understanding of email publishing or marketing.
• A creative eye and the ability to beautifully and quickly curate news content from widespread sources.
• Superior writing, copy-editing, line-editing, and top-editing skills.
• A passion for positive news content.
• The ability to understand what’s newsworthy and would resonate with readers.
• The ability to write with speed and accuracy.
• The ability to occasionally work varied hours, including time on the weekends to execute email campaigns.
• The ability to remain organized when there are many moving parts.
• A proactive and collaborative low-ego work style; you love working with people and people love working with you.
• Experience reporting and interviewing subjects is preferred.

COMPENSATION

This job will be compensated at $30 per hour.
