Ko Bragg, Race and Place Editor of Scalawag Magazine, is looking for pitches:
The late bell hooks once said, "pop culture is where the pedagogy is, it's where the learning is." With that in mind, we at Scalawag believe it’s time to examine how pop culture warps our understanding of policing and justice—and ultimately stalls overdue calls for abolition.Pop justice, our new series, is here to do just that. Catch up on what we've covered so far bit.ly/3QRIQTZ, and then let us know what piece of pop culture is on your mind. Whether you want to flag something for us to cover or write a piece yourself, we're all ears. Here are our pay rates if you do want to write for us: $800 for a reported story, $500 for a personal essay or long media review (1,000 words+), and $300 for a short media review (under 500 words).
Through mid-August, I'm commissioning reviews about Emmy-nominated shows. We already have Abbott and Euphoria taken care of. For this Emmys series, I'm looking for reviews about:
- Copaganda (or lack thereof) in storylines
- The sanitization of white scammers/capitalists (Inventing Anna, The Dropout, White Lotus)
- Intersection of police state and Drag Race

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: Scalawag aims to spark critical conversations about the many Souths where we live, love, and struggle. It amplifies voices of activists, artists, and writers to reckon with Southern realities as they are, rather than as they seem to be. Grief and Other Loves is Scalawag's series that aims to memorialize our collective losses. More information here.
- Read through a selection of recent pop justice-related articles/stories on its website.
- Review the submission guidelines here. Note that these are the publication's general guidelines to help you refine your pitch. You must still follow the editor's specific instructions above.
- Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook Database and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
- Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a few lines highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
