I'm the editor for a new journalism outlet.
This is an opportunity unlike anything I've taken on before, and it's kind of an experiment, so let me unpack it a bit.
This is a new company that's endeavoring to provide a suite of financial management tools (accounting software, grant assistance, etc.) to farmers.
Why are they building a media outlet? Good question! First off, they are taking seriously the task of building trust and credibility within the ag sector. The team has mighty credentials in tech, but that won't take them far with many farmers.
This isn't a trade publication per se, but it is aiming to publish articles that are useful and interesting to people whose lives are connected to agriculture in some way. At the same time, the hope is to put out stories that appeal to a general interest audience.
Building a media arm helps get the parent company's name out there in a way traditional marketing can't, while helping the company’s engineers and other technologists learn about pressing farm issues and current events.
This is an unusual arrangement! I'm going to help build a media outlet inside a tech company, which certainly gave me pause.
