A cornerstone series, it is about the things in our lives—jobs, ambitions, relationships, patterns, objects, expectations, and more—that we've let go. Essays in the series explore the full scope of the theme from defeat or surrender, to joy or liberation, and everything in between. Writers are invited to take the prompt in any direction they'd like and to push its limits. We welcome pitches only. Submissions and completed drafts will be deleted. Before you pitch, we recommend reading the series to get a sense of the tone, style, and critical thinking we expect in an essay. In your pitch, specify the thing that is being given up, propose a headline for your essay in the subject of your email, and meet the general pitching expectations set above in this guide.
