Pitches wanted (recovery, sobriety) | $250-$300 per article

[This opportunity was posted 30+ days ago and has expired.]

We are starting a new recurrent series to discuss the quality of mental and physical health representation shown — or not shown — within recent (between 2020 and today) popular television and movies, highlighting how marginalized communities are first in-line to be affected. Because this series will be monthly, we’d love to hear from someone interested in taking on both of these topics, with the potential of covering others connected to media, health, and representation in the near future. Open to US writers; Note: Due to certain state laws, if you haven’t previously freelanced with Healthline, we aren’t able to onboard new folks from CA, IN, MA, NJ, or WV. In your pitch, please include the shows/movies you'd like to discuss and the themes and/or conditions you'd be discussing.

RECOVERY AND SOBER OCTOBER, 1000-1500 WORDS

For October, we’re aiming to lift up National Recovery Month and discuss recent (between 2020 and today) portrayals of alcohol and substance use disorders. We want you to unpack how these conditions are portrayed: Are they shown with an empathetic lens? Are the depictions medically accurate? Do they rely on stereotypes? Are the characters flat outside of their addictions? We’d also love to know how Queer and BIPOC identities are shown in this context and how these representations are intertwined. How might marginalized communities be affected by these portrayals (or lack thereof?) Ideally, we’d like one example for alcohol use and one for substance use to zoom in on, but again, are open to your ideas! " 250-300 per piece Experience in editorial writing with a focus on health and/or dissecting media or discussing representation and social issues/inequities. Comfortable conducting doing interviews and citing scholarly sources. Because the pieces will highlight marginalized identities, Queer and/or BIPOC folks would be ideal, especially those living within intersecting identities or that have lived experience with health issues and/or discrimination.

Email me at with your pitch and three links to samples of editorial work. I'd love to see work that shows an ability to look critically at media and/or weave social issues into conversations about health. Please include "Pitch: Media Series" in your subject line. Accepting pitches until September 17, midnight EST.
