Remote Democracy Correspondent wanted | $35 per hour

CONTRACT: Democracy Correspondent.

• Beginning of Term: November 1, 2022
• End of Term: May 31, 2022

LOCATION: Remote in the U.S.

CONTRACT RATE: $35 per hour; No more than 10 hours per week

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Please submit a resume and 3 writing samples (links are fine), along with a brief cover letter detailing how you would approach the role to jobs@objectivejournalism.org.

EXPECTED TASKS:

• Produce 1 to 4 stories per month (at least), with the total number depending on length, scope, and time required to complete reporting. Examples include:A Q&A with a news organization trying to make democratic institutions more accessible.
  A reported accountability piece looking at how a specific newsroom is presenting democracy as a “both-sides” issue.
  
• Meet with your assigned editor regularly to discuss story direction and scope out what stories you will be pursuing throughout the course of the contract.
• Work with your assigned editor to ensure stories are ready for publication.
• Speak at events pertaining to stories you publish and democracy as it relates to journalism.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Previous experience writing and receiving constructive feedback (writing experience outside of journalism is ok). Experience with interviews is a plus.
• A knowledge of how to write and interview for different formats, including Q&As, explainers, reported pieces, and investigative pieces.
• A knowledge of both legacy and cable journalism institutions (like the Washington Post, CNN, and the The New York Times) and / or newer journalism initiatives and movements (like City Bureau, Outlier, and Press On). Being well sourced at legacy and cable institutions is a plus.

The Objective is a nonprofit newsroom building collective and narrative power for communities that have been misrepresented or dismissed in order to change the way journalism is practiced in the U.S.

Founded remotely in 2020 as a collective, The Objective is written by and for those underrepresented in journalism. We believe in journalism’s ability to be both representative of communities around the U.S. and thoughtful of how coverage is written for (not just about) them.
