Cara Giaimo is looking for pitches for Atlas Obscura:
Call for pitches. Are you absolutely champing to tell the world everything about your favorite animal, plant, bacteria, fungus, etc? This is your last chance to pitch me something for Atlas Obscura's upcoming book, Wild Life.
Just like Atlas Obscura is a travel guide for hidden corners, Wild Life is a field guide but somewhat off the trail. it highlights some of the world’s most interesting species, relationships, ecosystem dynamics, etc., as well as a few of the people who know them best.
This book already has sea otter archeology, plant-nursing rocks, fire-starting birds, and stargazing dung beetles. also interviews with a microbe filmmaker, a wild tortoise adoption coordinator, a snake charmer, and a zoomusicologist. and so much more.
I'm now accepting pitches for many fascinating biomes - mountains, coasts and shallows, oceans, islands, and — my personal favorite — cities.
If this sounds like your thing, here’s more info about all of it — what I’m looking for, rates, timelines, where to send pitches, what not to pitch, etc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mPd7Ha9Gc4gFjTtTIkNT59y1iHiFW7ihiDwFskPc408/edit
RATES:
- Entries - 300 to 450 words, $350
- Sidebars - 700 to 1,000 words, $800
- Interviews - ~500 words, $100
Any questions, ask me. I’d love to get pitches from outside my little corner of the internet, although it’s beautiful here.
Open to international writers? Definitely!
