CALL FOR PITCHES: The Atavist is (almost) always open for pitches! We’re looking for deeply researched and carefully crafted longform (8k-30k word) nonfiction with attention to narrative. Payment varies by project, but our baseline story fee is $6,000.
EIC Seyward Darby is looking for: “stories people want to read to the very last word, propulsive can't-put-them-down stories, stories people want to recount to their friends. We want surprises, adventure, intrigue, nuance, and above all humanity.”
We’re always seeking to diversify our pool of contributors, as well as the stories we tell. Our door is wide open for pitches from early-career journalists and seasoned pros alike. To understand our approach, check out some of our most recent stories: https://magazine.atavist.com/archive/
Atavist stories have won numerous prizes, including a National Magazine Award and a Livingston Award, and have been nominated for many more. Read our full list of accolades here: https://magazine.atavist.com/accolades/
Who can pitch: Anyone, anywhere! Early-career journalists, seasoned pros, Americans, writers from other countries—our door is wide open. We’re always seeking to diversify our pool of contributors, as well as the stories we tell.
