Contributors wanted for social studies resource | $2,500 per piece

Gibbs Smith Education is in need of experts to write engaging and educational sections for a social studies resource intended for high school students. Graduate students, postdocs, professors, K-12 educators, and public history professionals are welcome. Strong writing skills and an ability to meet deadlines are essential, as are reliable research skills.

The project’s focus is on the experiences and contributions of people from Latin America and the Caribbean and their descendants living in the United States. Topics will likely fall under the following themes:

• Migration, Economics, and Points of Origin
• The Struggle for Equality
• Leadership
• Culture

The full, paid submissions will be approximately 10,000 words. Compensation is $2,500 per submission, which will form the substance of much of what is in each volume. There will be a $500 payment upon the acceptance of the outline. The remaining $2,000 will be payable upon completion and acceptance of the work. You will also receive writer’s credit as well as two copies of the published volume.

The proposed deadlines will vary slightly depending on when contracts get signed and executed. We may be more flexible with some volumes more than others:

• November 15: Writing sample submitted
• November 23: Sign contracts
• November 28: Submit detailed outline of proposed topic. You can submit an early draft as early as you want for feedback. But we should receive some sort of working draft no later than December 16. We will give feedback within a week of receiving drafts.
• January 9 (start of day): Final drafts due for Volume 1 and Volume 2.

WRITING SAMPLE

If you are able to meet these dates and are interested, please complete a short writing sample on one of the three following topics by November 15th. Your sample must be original, not previously edited or published work. Our editing team needs to see how your voice and craft work for the target grade level and content. Naturally, proofread and self-edit your piece before emailing it back.

TOPICS (pick one)

• The formation and impact of Las Gorras Blancas in New Mexico.
• The reason for and results from the 2020 report “A Tale of Two Hollywoods” with regard to “Latinx” in this report: https://socialsciences.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/UCLA-Hollywood-Diversity-Report-2020-Film-2-6-2020.pdf
• Explain how after the Great Depression began, the Hoover Administration implemented mass deportations of Mexican Americans from Los Angeles and other areas, and the impacts of this policy.

INSTRUCTIONS

• Select one of the three topics above and write an interesting and accessible passage of 500 words or fewer for a high school audience/reading level. Help the reader connect the content to the world today.
• The piece should be self-contained. In other words, there should be a brief introduction at the start and a short wrap-up at the end.
• Give the passage a title and consider having a heading or two inside of it. Write with clarity and correct usage.
• Be sure your passage reflects cultural sensitivity.
• Don’t worry about including images, charts, graphs, etc. But feel free to put in bracketed suggestions for these if you like.
• List your research sources at the end of your passage. There is no need for footnotes or internal citations in the passage itself.
