Added 2022-11-23 13:37:50 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: IN THESE TIMES
Aparna Gopalan, Story Editor at In These Times, is looking for pitches:
Are you, or is a friend of yours, a current-or-future reporter interested in writing about labor, higher education, union democracy, left internationalism, etc. for a leading progressive publication (say,
In These Times Mag)? Come say hi: aparna@inthesetimes.com. Pitches welcome, but you can also just literally say hi and let us know you're open for assignments or send tips on what you think needs to be covered.
Rates range from $300 to $500 depending on where you fall on the opinion-feature spectrum.
Potentially—we have a culture section. As long as your pitch lays out the political stakes of whatever it is you’re covering and the topic speaks to issues in the ITT wheelhouse, it’s worth pitching.
Open to international writers? Absolutely, yes.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: In These Times is committed to covering the controversial issues of our time. A strong democracy depends on healthy debate, and In These Times is one of only a handful of independent media projects fighting to widen the terms of national discussion. In These Times has frequently scooped the mainstream media on stories ranging from the first coverage of global warming and extensive investigative reporting on the Iran Contra scandal in the ’80s to early in-depth coverage of the genocide in the Sudan in 2004.
- Read through its selection of recent articles/stories, categorized into: Politics, Labor, Investigations, Black Lives Matter
- Review the submission guidelines here. Note that these are the publication's general guidelines to help you refine your pitch. You must still follow the editor's specific instructions above.
- Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook Database and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
- Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a paragraph highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
