Gregory Harman, Founder/Co-Editor of Deceleration, is looking for writers

Deceleration, an online bioregional journal of environmental justice reporting and analysis, is planning a January 2023 relaunch and seeking independent reporters/photographers/videographers/designers and more for regular freelance assignments.

We are based in San Antonio but are interested also in writers and reporters working in and/or knowledgeable about the many communities of South Texas and the lower Gulf Coast and Rio Grande Valley. There is room here for folks with demonstrated EJ values and interests regardless of past journalism experience and those who come from historically marginalized communities. Deceleration suffered funding setbacks in 2022 and have largely paused our operations, but we are planning for an expansion in early 2023 that we expect to include a reliable freelance budget and possible part-time staff positions deeper into the year.

We write about the intersections of public health/energy transition/rights of nature /climate change and all the ways that communities across the South Texas region (and beyond) are organizing themselves for environmental justice and resilience (+) and strengthening networks of community care. We are also expanding our board of community advisors and seeking volunteers in this capacity with a range of skillsets in journalism, small business management, bookkeeping, organizing, education, videography, and more. Opportunity here for our elders and emerging leaders to participate in helping steer our work as well as those who want to dip into daily demands of the growing initiative and help us develop new talent.

Understand that we are very small nonprofit and pay will range from flat fees between $50 to $300 per assignment up to (we expect) 50 cent per word for longer-form features.
