Gabrielle Birkner, Features Editor at Chalkbeat, is looking for pitches:
Chalkbeat is proud to publish personal essays by students, educators, and others who spend their lives in schools or trying to improve them. We are currently seeking out essays on the following topics: https://www.chalkbeat.org/first-person
This month marks 10 years since the Sandy Hook school massacre. How did the events of that tragic day impact you and your schools? What did you expect to have changed a decade on?
What’s been notable about the first half of the 2022-23 school year? What are people missing about the pandemic’s effects on students, and how is that playing out in your classroom?
Tell us about how new laws and guidance about what schools can and cannot teach have affected your lessons. And more broadly, how has the political climate altered the conversations taking place in your classrooms?
Chalkbeat welcomes other personal essay ideas about teaching, learning, and leading. We pay $125 per published essay. You can read our submission guidelines here. If you have any questions, we’re at firstperson@chalkbeat.org.
