Journalists wanted (San Diego CA) | 20+ cents per word

COMPANY/PUBLICATION: NORTH COAST CURRENT

The North Coast Current — an award-winning online community news journal based in Encinitas, California — and its affiliate publication OsideNews seek freelance writers interested in covering local government topics specifically for Oceanside, a coastal north San Diego County community. Candidates must be local to the San Diego region or show a strong familiarity with the area (practically all assignments are local to coastal North County).

TOPIC AREAS:

• Government (specifically the city of Oceanside and San Diego County-related news that relates to Oceanside)
• Education (K-12, private schools, higher education related to Oceanside)

FREELANCE DETAILS:

• Assignments average 300-500 words per story and can be a mix of stories pitched by the freelancer or by the Current and OsideNews to the freelancer. Photo and video opportunities are also available on a per-assignment negotiated basis.
• Stories are a mix of time-sensitive and evergreen material.
• One to two stories per month (limited to 35 total per year in California).
• In addition to professionals, the North Coast Current and OsideNews also welcome university and community college journalism students to apply.

RATES

• Professional per-word pay rate starts at 20 cents per word.
• College student per-word pay rate starts at 10 cents per word.

• Three to five samples of published journalistic work
• Professionals: Must hold at least an Associate's Degree in journalism or related media field

College/university students: Must have proof of enrollment in the school's journalism or similar media program
