Pitches wanted (politics, policy) | 50 cents to $1 per word
Added 2023-01-06 18:05:22 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: THE NEW REPUBLIC
Patrick Caldwell, Deputy Editor at The New Republic, is looking for pitches:
A new year means I need pitches for stories! Email is patcaldwell@journa.host. Particularly looking for more scene/character driven pieces about how politics works in DC, but any narrative magazine style stories are great!
For The New Republic's print magazine, I edit our front of the book, 1500-2000 words. Favor politics and policy stories, but love any compelling narrative with character and scene. No set range, fees start around 50 cents, but skew closer to $1 a word, based on extent of reporting required

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: The New Republic was founded in 1914 as an intellectual call to arms for public-minded intellectuals advocating liberal reform in a new industrial age. Now, TNR remains more committed to its first principles and the need to rethink outworn assumptions and political superstitions as radically changing conditions demand. More information here.
- Read through a selection of recent articles/stories on its website.
- Review the submission guidelines here. Note that these are the publication's general guidelines to help you refine your pitch. You must still follow the editor's specific instructions above.
- Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook Database and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
- Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a paragraph highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
