CALL FOR ESSAYS: EXPLORING DIVERSITY IN CONTEMPORARY ART
(DEUTSCHE VERSION UNTEN)
The arts have long been utilised as both a tool and a medium to express diverse perspectives and experiences. At Art Düsseldorf, we see diversity as a catalyst for innovation, a requirement for sustainable cohesion, and a premise leading to broad public support for the arts. We are particularly interested in exploring creative new approaches to diversity in the art world — and how these approaches can be used to promote positive social change.
For the second edition of our essay series, we want to take a closer look at contemporary art in relation to the topic of diversity. What role does diversity play in producing and distributing art? How can we ensure more diversity in the arts?
We invite journalists, art historians, scientists, artists, and curators to submit short proposals for essays of 800-1,000 words on the topic of diversity. The aim is to collect thoughts and voices that critically reflect on the following questions or topics:
- How have artists and curators pushed for greater representation of diverse voices in the art world?
- How can we create more dialogue around the importance of embracing diversity in the arts?
- The intersection of race, gender, sexuality, and other identities in the arts.
- The impact of colonialism and globalisation on diversity in the arts.
- Alternative canons and diverse cultural practices in the arts.
- The role of activism and resistance in promoting diversity in the arts.
Proposals are welcome but not limited to these topics. Writers who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, or from other underrepresented groups are highly encouraged to pitch.
Please submit pitches, NOT pre-written essays.
Pitches can be submitted in English or German.Send pitches — including two to three clips (examples of previous writing) and your rate (how much you charge per word) — to the magazine’s digital editor, Chris Erik Thomas, at thomas@art-dus.de with “Diversity Pitch” in the subject line by Friday, February 17.
