Emma Bates, Co-Founder and CEO of Diem Newsletter, is looking for pitches:
Attention: Open call for Diem Newsletter Essay writers!
Have you ever read our newsletter and been like wait, I wanna talk about this or I have such a good idea for a topic that the Diem audience would ~vibe~ with? https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/
Well! It's your lucky day.
We created the Things We Don’t Talk About newsletter to start the conversations we wish were happening more frequently beyond our private group chats.
To talk about those things we're not quite sure we're ~allowed~ to bring up but want to go deep on all at the same time.
Last year I wrote 48 essays and now we’re looking to add a diverse set of voices into the mix as guest essay writers so we can start even more taboo, candid, fun and thoughtful conversations. Theses are my top 10 favourite topics to think/write about:
- Club Emma - A look at the gendered economy of the elite nightclub/party scene and musings on the phase of my life friends affectionately named “Club Emma”: https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/club-emma
- The Name Change Game - Want to cause a debate at a dinner table? Ask people their thoughts on changing their name post marriage, or more specifically ask men, in heteronormative relationships, if they would take their wife's name: https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/the-name-change-game
- AI Emma, just another woman on the internet - Earlier this year, I created AI Emma and then was forced to explore the reality of female presenting AI’s after the viral, sexualized response AI Emma was met with upon launching. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/ai-emma-just-another-woman-on-the
- Why Do We Share a Bed? If you know me, you’ll know how much i LOVE history, I try to weave historical context into all our newsletters wherever possible – this exploration into the social history of bed sharing was so fun to write. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/why-do-we-share-a-bed
- Have Fan Girls Created The Social Internet As We Know It? I’m a huge fan of fandoms, this was a look at the social internet via the lens of the fan girls who have shaped it. Inspired by Kaitlyn Tiffany Book: Everything I Need I Get From You. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/have-fan-girls-created-the-social
- I Don’t Feel Maternal - Exploring and sharing my feelings around my lack of maternal instinct was very therapeutic and the number of women we had reaching out saying they felt the same was incredibly validating. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/i-dont-feel-maternal
- I Don’t Know Anything, Right?? Women’s lack of self-esteem explored via the lens of the history of linguistics. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/i-dont-know-anything-right
- Why we’re all sad about Insta - Written in the wake of the Instagram algorithm controversy this summer, I love thinking/writing about the future of social experiences online. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/why-were-all-sad-about-insta
- Why Is It So Hard To Make Friends? - A look at adult friendships and how the evolution of marriage in the 20th century negatively impacted the strength of female friendships. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/why-is-it-so-hard-to-make-friends
- Finally! A vision for the social internet in 2023. An exploration into what’s on our vision board for next year and why we believe the future is collective media, not social media. https://diemnewsletter.substack.com/p/a-vision-for-the-internet-in-2023
We’re interested in personal essays, opinion pieces and conversation starters on topics related to relationships, health & money.
So maybe that’s where you come into the mix?
Importantly! You'll have an editor so you don't even need to be a professional writer just someone passionate about getting the conversation started.
Our rates for Diem stories start at $200 and the majority of commissioned stories hit the 700-word mark unless otherwise specified.
