Pitches wanted (gender, neurodivergence) | $350 day rate
Added 2023-02-22 13:54:56 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: CNN'S STORIES FROM THE MARGINS
Deadline: 27 February 2023
Another call for pitches: I am currently shortlisting pitches for CNN/As Equals 'Stories from the Margins', and I'm now looking for reported stories (not personal essays) on gendered aspects of neurodivergence in the global south. Pitch here: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=JYi0DnHoWUS8ctDs1o8fOWNkSoz0lRpDqv9dLcNmOZ5UQzE4Tjg4SzVLVUNFTDdVTEFWRlhIOTJJVS4u
"Reported stories/ no personal essays" doesn't mean that you can't be personally affected by the issue, it just means that your story has to be framed and executed as reporting, where you write in the third person, speak to sources, etc. This is in line with the CNN style guide.
Important: An As Equals story seeks to uncover the systemic/structural/institutional reasons that gender inequality persists. The bar is high for what qualifies. It has to make connections from the personal and particular, to the systemic and structural.
Your story should have strong character-driven narrative; it should have the potential for dynamic graphic and multimedia treatment, and should aim to have real-world impact.
By "gendered aspects of neurodivergence in the global south" we mean how gender affects experience with various aspects of neurodivergence, incl. ADHD, autism, etc. And we're situating this in the global south because those experiences are underreported.
Lastly, (this is important!) we're not looking for "parachute journalism", but deep stories from storytellers who are from these backgrounds or have covered these underreported groups extensively.
Read the extended call for pitches here: https://edition.cnn.com/.element/interactive/2022/12/stories-from-the-margins-call-out.pdf. The deadline says January 24, but for this particular category of pitches, deadline is February 27. The form above will be accepting responses until February 27.
On average, each story will be about 2,000 words long, and successful journalists will be paid a day rate of US$350. The total number of days to report, write and edit will be worked out with your editor.
(We're hoping that all the categories we set out are covered in this series, and this particular issue of gender x neurodivergence is one that we're interested in but didn't get strong pitches first time round framed as reporting, hence this additional call for pitches.)
