Burum Collective are making a zine!

A zine for hospitality workers, about hospitality workers, by hospitality workers with a sharp focus on unionisation and workers rights. Once this zine has been commissioned, collated and created we’re going to do everything in our power to ensure it is distributed to as many hospitality venues as we can, so it can end up in the hands of as many hospitality workers as possible.

We’re not talking about a glossy publication, we’re talking about a grassroots collection of essays, illustrations and information that will hopefully help to inform, entertain and empower the workers of our industry.

Sound like something you want to get involved in? Pitching for this project has now opened, and will close on Sunday 2nd of April.

WRITERS: WHAT TO PITCH

We’re looking for short, sharp insights into what it is to work in hospitality. Want to write an ode to your sharpie, explore what it takes to be a regular, think about all the things a walk in freezer sees in a day? What is it that you think is always missing from a profile of a restaurant, or a think piece on post covid hospitality? What are the conversations, the thoughts and the ideas that fuel your opens, closes and the chaos in between? From blue roll to AFDs we want to hear it!

Hospitality is a vivid, varied place to work and we want to create a conversation that accurately reflects that. So think about what hospitality means to you, or what it is that represents your role like no other and tell us all about it!

WRITERS: HOW TO PITCH

Send an email to rachel@burumcollective.com with PITCH: Service, Please! as the subject heading. Please include:

• Your name
• Your contact details
• A little bit about you and your experience within hospitality
• A brief description of the topic you would like to write about and the form you see it taking
• Any other information you feel would be useful for us to know|

We will get back to you by the 1st of May 2023

RATES, TIMELINES AND LOGISTICS

Written pieces of work will be max 500 - 700 words and paid £125. Illustrations will also be paid £125.

All writers/illustrators will be commissioned by the 1st May 2023. Deadline for written first drafts will be the 30th June 2023, and for illustrations the deadline will be 31st July 2023

Please invoice alongside your first draft. All invoices will be paid within one week of being received.

All written work will be edited by Rachel and any feedback/edits will be provided by 31st July 2023.

Zine publication is currently scheduled for Autumn 2023.

How long are pitches open?

We will be accepting pitches until the end of the month, that’s the 2nd April 2023

What should my pitch include?

Your name, the best way to contact you, some information regarding your experience within the hospitality industry, a brief description of the idea you have and some indication that you have read this page and know what Burum Collective are about.

Do I need to have professional writing/illustrative experience to pitch?

No! Consider this an active encouragement to pitch if you’ve always wanted to create something but never been sure how. We’ve been there and we know how daunting it can be, we promise to treat your ideas with the respect they deserve.

I would love to pitch but I don’t want to be traced back to my place of work, is there an option for anonymous contributions?

Absolutely, yes. Just let us know in your initial pitch.

What are the rates?

In the interest of honesty: not as high as we would like! Written pieces of work will be max 500-700 words and paid £125. Illustrations will be paid at £125 per image. If we are able raise some more funds for this project, then the fees will be raised

I haven’t worked in hospitality but I have lots of ideas, can I still pitch?

For written work: not this time we’re afraid, but there are plenty of other outlets for you, this one’s just for hospitality folk. For illustrations we are more likely to be lenient on this, so take your chance, shoot your shot!

When will I hear back?

Pitches for Service, Please! close at the end of March and we promise to get back to everyone (with constructive feedback!) by the end of April. Please be patient with us and please do not chase us for a response within this timeframe.

What about copyright?

Excellent question, thank you for asking! It’s all yours! All we ask is that you allow us a three month exclusivity period from the launch of the zine. From then on your work is your own to do with as you please. Just acknowledge us in any reprint, thank you.
