Remote Science Writer wanted | $100 to $150 per hour (part-time)
Added 2023-03-10 14:10:13 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: BUNSEN
Hi, we’re Bunsen. We do creative work for science companies who are solving some of the toughest problems on the planet, like inventing and implementing brain computer interfaces, or developing tools to help us design biology, and others who explore the unique immune system of the brain. Mostly, we help these folks be understood so that they can achieve their most ambitious goals. We’re creators who need the collaborative support of a master wordsmith. Maybe that’s you?
DESCRIPTION
As a Scientific Storyteller, you take our client’s copy to the next level. You’ll work with our discovery, information architecture, and design team to transform the information they’ve gathered into an unforgettable story. You’re curious, quick to learn, and know great language when you see it (or when you write it). You have experience writing copy for the eyes and minds of scientists, engineers, investors, and other educated audiences, and know how to write an inspiring, pithy story without losing precision.
ROLE
- Collaborating with the discovery team to unpack and synthesize complex information about our clients, the problem they solve, and the solution they are putting out to the world
- Working with the design team to devise sophisticated copy that aligns to the client’s brand, goals, audience, and technology
- Writing for a variety of formats (especially websites and presentations) and technical audiences (such as scientists, investors, and physicians)
- Crafting headlines that demand attention and clearly communicate what our clients do differently
- When we think of a successful headline, we think of one that 1) tells a story and 2) gets people excited to work with our clients. This website we created for Felix Biotech is a great example.
- Editing copy to be web-appropriate and consistent with website architecture
- Providing quality assurance to certify that client feedback is implemented and errors are corrected
EXPERIENCE
- Mid-to-Senior level: At least 3-5 years experience in a communications field like copywriting, marketing, or PR, or in a technical field like biology or engineering
- You’re experienced in writing short-form content, especially websites and presentations, and are familiar with constraints and best practices.
- You’re experienced writing for technical audiences, and are quick to grasp and communicate complex topics.
- You’ve worked with marketing and design teams before and are familiar with the process of creating brands, sites, and decks.
- You’re experienced writing about scientific topics, especially within (but not limited to) biotech, biopharma, agri-foodtech, and artificial intelligence.
QUALIFICATIONS
You have insatiable intellectual curiosity. Our clients are building technologies that are so new, they often have to invent new names to describe what they do: prognostic digital twins, resistance mapping, priming therapies. Even when the technology doesn’t exist (yet), we need a collaborator that’s willing to put in the extra work to understanding the client and find answers to the important questions.
You have storytelling prowess. Brand and story have the special ability to support logical decision making with subliminal messaging and emotion. It doesn’t matter if you’re a twelve-year-old picking a cereal box from the grocery store shelf or an VC deciding which therapeutics company to invest in. We’re looking for someone that knows how to harness that power and intertwine it with tangible proof points for our clients.
You believe that the first draft is never the best draft. During one of our website redesign projects, we presented over 100 iterations of the hero copy before landing on messaging that resonated with the client. While we don’t expect this range of experimentation for each project, we’d love to learn about your creative process and the exercises you use to explore different directions and ideas.
You have an obsession with organization and detail. An important skill we’re looking for is someone with the ability to maintain systems for sharing copy iterations in Google Docs that align with the website architecture defined in Figma, enabling our team and our clients to easily comment and make suggestions. Have other ideas for how our team can stay organized? We’d love to get your perspective.
You are a strategic systems thinker. When we’re building a 5+ page website, it’s challenging—but critical—to keep track of each section’s purpose and content. We’re looking for someone interested in the bigger picture. Instead of just writing copy to fill a page, you are motivated to write copy intentionally while knowing the goals of the client and the perspective of the audience.
OPPORTUNITY
Time: Contract to hire. We’d like to start with 10-20 hrs/wk on individual projects with the opportunity to move to full time with the right fit.
Compensation: We’re currently budgeting around $100/hr - $150/hr for hourly, and our yearly salary would depend on experience and fit. Does the role look amazing but this doesn’t? Reach out. Let’s talk about it.
