Deadline: 15 April 2023
Chris Azzopardi, Editorial Director of Pride Source, is looking for pitches:
Any queer opera writers out there? Looking to assign someone a feature—email me at chris@pridesource.com asap. ALSO we're hitting the ground running with Pride coverage and I'm looking for some thoughtful pitches from queer writers. Personal essays, long-form features, etc.
More on how to pitch us here: https://pridesource.com/pitching-a-story/
Please keep in mind that the pitches that get my immediate attention are ones that can resonate with our Michigan audience, whether that be a more universal "this can affect any queer person" idea OR a direct MI link/source.
LGBTQ+ writers, some of what I've commissioned lately so you have an idea of the kind stories that rock our world:
- This playfully sexy, wildly informative and hilariously witty deep dive by Dani Lamorte into plant daddy culture: https://pridesource.com/article/plant-daddies-everywhere-a-look-inside-the-men-who-father-their-foliage/
- An excellent historical hook, thanks to a great pitch sent to me by Etamaze Nkiri, to something that is, over a century later, still getting conservatives' panties in a wad: https://pridesource.com/article/the-first-drag-queen-was-a-slave-who-created-safe-spaces-for-queer-people/
- Emma Smith wrote this illuminating essay about her move to Spain that is full of hope and optimism for LGBTQ+ people living through homophobia and transphobia in the U.S.: https://pridesource.com/article/moving-to-spain-has-helped-me-imagine-a-queer-future-for-the-u-s/
- Jupiter Contreras's inspiring story on taking their home on the road and how it changed their life — one so beautifully told I am actually considering buying my own RV: https://pridesource.com/article/i-took-my-home-on-the-road-only-then-did-i-discover-how-to-be-truly-at-home-with-myself/
Rates are $100-$250 (and up, depending on story scope). I'll be assigning the majority of stories in the next couple of weeks, so the earlier the better. Ideally all pitches by mid-April. More info here: https://pridesource.com/pitching-a-story/
