Epicenter-NYC, a community journalism multiplatform initiative, seeks a freelance reporter devoted to ongoing health equity issues in and around New York City.

Epicenter’s stories, newsletters, podcasts and community engagement often center on health, whether that’s reporting on the outcomes of living in illegal basements or the communities and neighborhoods hardest hit by Covid-19. Communities of color often do not have sufficient access to quality health care or information that might lead them to services. The designated health reporter will further Epicenter’s efforts to bridge solutions, just as we were able to do with our Covid-19 vaccine work.

JOB DESCRIPTION: FREELANCE HEALTH REPORTER

The healthcare reporter will work with Epicenter through June 2023, at a minimum. We are interested in producing a body of solutions-focused and service-oriented stories that highlight success and innovations that break down barriers to good health, as well as the ways that health outcomes are a direct reflection of health care policies and the health care system’s successes and failures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Produce roughly two written stories with at least one multimedia component (i.e. video and photos) per week as part of ongoing series about healthcare equity in New York City. Stories would be published in various formats across Epicenter’s universe including in our twice-weekly newsletter, on our website and weekly podcast as well as social media video explainers.
• Collaborate with our cross-functional team to design and deploy alternate outreach methods, such as flyering or handing out printed materials.
• Summarize and amplify findings for a social media audience, through text (Twitter & Facebook) and video (TikTok & Instagram).
• Assess the needs of our communities and ensure content reflects these priorities.

ABOUT YOU/QUALIFICATIONS

• Have a background in health reporting. Public health experience is a plus.
• You are passionate about health equity.
• You welcome community discussions and different points of view.
• Not afraid to experiment and try old and new tactics building and engaging the community.
• Ability to make compelling content in written/video formats for the community
• Excellent oral and written communication.
• We’d also love someone who speaks a language in addition to English and can traverse multiple communities across New York City.
• We have some desired skills listed above but of utmost importance is your commitment to community — in all its forms.

SALARY RANGE

Between $3,000-$4,000/month depending on experience.

This is a freelance hybrid position. Candidates should live in NYC and be comfortable engaging with communities across the city.
