COMPANY/PUBLICATION: SUCCULENT—TRANS-INCLUSIVE SAPPHIC COMICS

We are seeking submissions from artists, writers and teams for 11-21 page long erotic comics ready for our anthology Kickstarter launching in Spring 2024.

We’re looking to create an anthology of juicy stories inspired by the world in bloom. Femme flowers, sappy butches, moss covered stones, prickly pillow princesses and fleshy dykes in any arrangement. Cut tops, bulbous bottoms and thorny switches in hot, humid and dirty situations.

Trans and nonbinary exploration and acceptance has always been deeply rooted in sapphic communities and expression, and this is something we want to honour and reflect in the anthology. Give us your genderqueer lesbians, your defiant fuckbois, and your hot trans femme wife basking in the sun. Let’s grow a garden of Sapphic Delights.

Submissions are open April 7th until May 7th, 2023.

WE WANT

This anthology is a love letter to the wider sapphic community and we want to elevate Own Voices as much as possible and celebrate the full spectrum of what sapphic can mean.

We are using sapphic as an umbrella term which includes, but is not limited to lesbian, queer, bi, pan, trans, non binary, gender non conforming, intersex, agender people, WLW (women loving women) and dykes. Please apply as long as you’d be comfortable being associated with the title of the anthology.

We don’t want to play the ‘who is sapphic enough’ game, or force artists to out themselves for this anthology and so artists/writers can remain anonymous if they wish.

CREATORS

We’re looking for:

• Creators/full teams to provide both art and story.​
• Script writers to work with one of our selected artists.​
• Artists to work with our selected script writers.

We are a comics only, no prose anthology, however to help provide opportunities to a wider number of voices, we’re also looking to help team up writers and artists. All applicants must be 18+ and are accepted worldwide but stories must be understandable to an English-speaking audience.

We’re particularly looking for:

• Creators who identify as sapphic, though ‘lived experience’ isn’t a requirement.
• Black, PoC, Indigenous, Disabled, Intersex, Ace/Aro, Trans Women, or Trans Feminine spectrum story writers for this anthology, as they are particularly underrepresented in own voice comics, as well as characters on those spectrums.

Creators Get:

• Writers get a £150 flat rate with potential increase with Kickstarter stretch goals.
• Artists get a £70 per page rate with potential bonuses with Kickstarter stretch goals.
• Artist/writer creators get a £150 flat rate + £70 per page with potential bonuses with Kickstarter stretch goals. (If you’re a complete team it’s up to you to split your money yourselves)
• 30% royalties for digital sales post the Kickstarter to be split evenly between all the stories.
• 4 free comp copies of the book, plus you can buy more at 50% retail to sell yourself.
• We request exclusive publishing rights for 1 year, then you can do what you want with your story.
• Payment after successful funding of the book Kickstarter. If funding is unsuccessful we’ll use digital sales to make sure everyone gets paid instead.

STORIES

We’re looking for:

• Comics only, no prose.
• Worldwide applications accepted, but stories must be understandable to an English speaking audience.
• Stories that explore sex/relationships/identity/body diversity in ways you rarely see in mainstream erotica.
• Unique takes on the theme “Garden of Sapphic Delights”
• Bonus points for interesting environments, settings, characters and stories with a bit more plot than “they have sex The End”.

We don’t want:

• Auto-bio, fan-art or stories using other people’s characters (including role play characters).
• Underage characters in sexual situations.
• No non con, no excessive gore, no bestiality.

ABOUT THE BOOK

• UK Standard size (240x157mm or 9.5×6 inches)
• Limited colour palette in the colours of the sunset lesbian flag. 
• Length approx 180 pages, which means we’ll be accepting 8-16 stories.

• August 2023 – Script
• September 2023 – Thumbnails with placed text
• November 2023 – Pencils
• January 2024 – Inks
• February 2024 – Colours

ABOUT THE EDITORS

Niki Smith is an artist, writer, and lover of fine comics (and some pretty trashy ones too). She is the author of the Lambda Literary Award-nominated graphic novels CROSSPLAY and THE DEEP & DARK BLUE, and her newest book THE GOLDEN HOUR. She has appeared in Smut Peddler 2014 and edits and draws for Filthy Figments: Comics with Passion.

Ollie Hicks (Hicks!!) is a comics creator and editor. They have a PhD from the University of Dundee in Comics Studies and formerly worked as a Graphic Novels Editor at Rebellion. They are repped by Britt Siess of Britt Siess Creative Management. Their debut graphic novel, GRAND SLAM ROMANCE, co-created with their wife Emma Oosterhous, is coming from Surely Books in 2023.

Tab Kimpton is the co-editor and fulfilment manager of previous Discord Comics anthologies. This queer shapeshifter and comic artist will use admin magic and kickstarter experience to nurture the ground roots of the project. With works such as Minority Monsters and Sir, Butler & Boy, Tab attempts to fill in the gaps that slip down the cracks in the LGBT acronym, especially for erotica.
