Nick Hune-Brown, Senior Editor at The Local Magazine, is looking for writers:

Call for writers! We're planning a Finch West LRT issue at The Local Magazine—stories from the city's changing Northwest, from Jane + Finch to Rexdale to Humber College, etc.—and we want to work with writers that know those communities well. Send me a note: nick@thelocal.to

Happy to get pitches, but also just want to hear from writers who know those neighbourhoods looking for possible assignments. Rates vary, but start at about 75 cents a word.

No hard deadline, but we're gonna be assigning stories over the next few weeks.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST: Unless otherwise stated, include (1) a cover letter explaining how you meet the requirements or why you are the right fit for the job; (2) a one-paragraph summary of your relevant experience, credentials and publication credits; (3) your strongest clips or links to published work; and (4) a resume detailing your writing experience.

ABOUT THE LOCAL: The Local is an independent magazine exploring urban health and social issues in Toronto. We take a data-driven, yet authentically human approach to storytelling on pressing issues facing the city, from poverty and homelessness, to mental health, aging, and food insecurity. The Local is unabashedly Toronto , reporting from corners of the city that are too often ignored or misunderstood, with bylines as diverse as the city itself. We publish in-depth features, essays, data journalism and commentary, alongside multimedia and other experimental forms of storytelling. The Local aims to fill a role that traditional media neglects — turning complex policy issues into compelling narratives, and addressing problems that are pressing and ongoing, even if they don’t have a news hook.
