Pitches wanted from professors (summer vacation) | ~20-25 cents per word

Deadline: 5 June 2023
“Must be nice to get summers off!” This remark is a familiar one to those who teach undergraduates, and it’s made no less frustrating by its frequency. But the implications of this belief go beyond lots of scholars feeling frustrated at cookouts and summer camp pickup; it shapes battles over state budgets, union contracts, and academic freedom.
We are now accepting pitches for a mailbag roundtable on the question “What Do Professors Even Do All Summer?” As with all of our mailbags, we’re looking for pieces that use the specifics of the writer’s experience to explore a broader aspect of the question.
Contrary to our usual approach, we are looking for pitches from historians who act as faculty to undergraduates working in all institutions in all capacities, from grad students to adjunct faculty to tenured and tenure-track professors. Each piece should be 400-500 words; compensation is $100.
To pitch, please use the form at the bottom of our Pitch Us page, selecting “Summer Vacation Mailbag” from the dropdown menu. Pitches are due by June 5; acceptances will be sent by June 9.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: Contingent is a non-profit history magazine that is rooted in a principle that history is for everyone. While a lot of publishers and magazines think the audience for history is pretty narrow, Contingent thinks everyone can understand and find meaning in stories about the past. Contingent takes a much broader view of relevance and publishes pieces about such topics as dinosaur hunting, women’s wrestling gear, coal mines, and embroidery. More information here.
- Read through a selection of recent Mailbag pieces on its website.
- Review the submission guidelines here.
- Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook Database and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
- Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a few lines highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
